Hi. I know I've been making a handful of posts here recently. However, I was curious what Vanilla uses to connect with MySQL and whether I could hijack that to work with Microsoft SQL. Just putting that out there.

...I should have googled / checked the installation guide...
It does said that you can have data stored in other databases. I just need to figure out how to do that...
Edit:
I was working with FreeMetaData in order to attempt to read from my MS SQL Server database (by adding it as a data source). However, when trying to establish the connection, the program seemed to freeze up (no messages).
I checked that the port (1433) was working and the database was responsive to another test.
What do I need to do?
Hi Scott,
All our tools and our metada are capable to connect to many types of database.
For MS SQL Server, you need to use full URL as following : jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://[YOUR IP ADDRESS]:[PORT]/[YOUR DB NAME];instance=[YOUR INSTANCE NAME]
Fill up user and password and you should be ok to connect to you MS SQL Server.
Regards.
Minor emphasis on 'should'. I had tried entering the URL stuff before, although I had not had the instance name included. However, even when including the instance name, I get zero feedback from the program (no 'unable to get underlying database' or 'test connected'). It seems like something has stalled or broken in between the request for the test and the response. (Are there any logs [tucked away] that would help?) Meanwhile, do you have recommended settings for the SQL Server?
Edit: I've checked the driver for MS SQL Server independently with another test and it connected fine. I'm running with jre8, and I have SQL Server 2008 R2
Hi Scott,
I'm not sure of what I read, but you need to have have Java Devlopment Tool Kit 1.7 in order to make Vanilla 4.4.2 tools work properly. (Tools can be started with JRE or other JDK but will not act normally).
If you want to find more detailed logs on FreeMetadata, you can add the argument "- console" at the begining of "freemetadata.ini" file which is in FreeMetadata folder. You will get a console.
You can also check in FreeMetaData\resources\jdbc that you have only one JTDS driver : ( jtds-1.3.1.jar ) Other issues may come from your database or network.
Regards.
Hmm...well downgrading seemed to work. ( I was running with Java Development Tool Kit 1.8). Things seem to run relatively smoothly now. If I run into anything else, I'll post. Thanks.
